Details of Formation: There is no information how the group was created. Calling itself the Al-Shabab, after the notoriously bloodthirsty Somalian based Islamic terror group, sources first mentioned it in September 2012.
Details of Termination: In January 2020, the police conducted an operation to arrest illegal gold panners and their militias.
Purpose: The group claims to promote ZANU-PF’s controversial indigenisation drive. They evict shop owners in Mbizo from their business premises and attack opposition members on behalf of ZANU-PF party politicians. The group is also suspected of running gold trade for President Mnangagwa.
Organisation: The group is commanded by Tapiwa Muto, a ZANU-PF youth officer. The group has links to the State Security minister Owen Ncube and other ZANU-PF politicians from the Midlands.
