S.S.P. Militia (Haiti)

Details of Formation: In 1991 President Aristide was accused of forming a private militia by General Cedras, who led a military revolt against him.
Details of Termination: Aristide’s overthrow on 20 September 1991 is used as termination date for the group.
Purpose: Supporters of Aristide claimed the group was a presidential security service, and it is reported that the threat that the military would assassinate the president provided the motivation to form the group.
Organisation: The group was detached from the regular chain of command and answerable only to the President.
Weapons and Training: The militia was trained by French, American and Swiss security specialists, for roughly three months.
