Country: | Uganda |
Details of Formation: | These groups were armed to protect themselves against the Karamoja warriors/vigilantes that were armed by the Anti Stock Theft Unit movement in the 1980s and 1990s. The government struggled to control the ASTU, the Karamoja in particular, and therefore, to help protect neighbouring districts they created opposing militias. |
Details of Termination: | Following a government initiative, armed groups in the eastern parts of Uganda and the Karamoja region were forcefully disarmed in 2000. There are no reports about the Protection Vigilantes being active afterwards. Therefore, it is assumed that the group, together with the Karamojong Vigilantes, ceased to exist in 2000. |
